What are Ketones?
Ketones are produced naturally by the liver when the body breaks down fat for energy. Ketones are most commonly generated in periods of fasting or on a ketogenic diet. During these times, the body changes from using sugar for energy, to using fat, which is converted into ketones.
Why Ketones are Important
- Ketones provide an energy source to the body when sugars are low.
- When the body makes ketones, the body burns fat, which is usually targeted in ketogenic diets for weight loss.
