Why Are Ketones Important?

What are Ketones?

Ketones are produced naturally by the liver when the body breaks down fat for energy. Ketones are most commonly generated in periods of fasting or on a ketogenic diet. During these times, the body changes from using sugar for energy, to using fat, which is converted into ketones.

Why Ketones are Important

  • Ketones provide an energy source to the body when sugars are low.
  • When the body makes ketones, the body burns fat, which is usually targeted in ketogenic diets for weight loss.
